2018: September 6th
I am in love with this White Lung album! They used the track Wild Failure in that movie Excision I wrote about yesterday and I've been listening to the album since.
NCBD yesterday:
And, what I forgot came out and will no doubt have to hurry to grab a copy of:
Playlist from yesterday:
Reverend Horton Heat - Martini Time
The Atlas Moth - The Old Believer
Alice in Chains - Rainier Fog
Stellar Corpses - Respect the Dead
White Lung - Eponymous
Ennio Morricone - Black Belly of the Tarantula OST
I watched David Lynch's Inland Empire last night for the first time in probably over ten years. One of the most incredible theatrical experiences I've had when it came out back in 2007, I've never made it through the entire film on DVD, simply because it is long, fragmented, and requires very specific viewing criteria for me, criteria that usually means I end up falling asleep because of my early schedule. That criteria is
1) Absolute Darkness
2) Stoned
3) As few interruptions as possible
This usually means I have to watch it late at night, and I just don't make it through. Inland Empire really shines in a theatre, but at home it's a bit arduous. That said, it is a wonderful film, amazingly dream-like, and after reading this awesome little interpretation, I am contemplating another viewing sometime within the next week.
Card of the day:
Again, let's go face value and say this means I'll finish the editing on DwC 43 today.

2018: September 5th
This Yonatan Gat record is completely blowing my damn mind! Thanks to Mr. Wellman for the hesitant recommendation. I Love it!
Watched Excision on Shudder last night. Jesus, the description Shudder uses is perfect, "...blackly comic high school horror film that feels like Welcome to the Dollhouse if it were directed by David Cronenberg. Even the trailer is insane:
Richard Bates, Jr. has three movies and I love all of them.
Playlist from 9/03:
Etta James - Eponymous

2018: September 3rd RIP Conway Savage
Long-time piano player for Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds Conway Savage passed away earlier today, so I thought this performance was doubly in order.
Playlist from 9/02:
Stellar Corpses - Respect the Dead EP
Alice in Chains - Black Gives Way to Blue
Alice in Chains - Rainier Fog
David Lynch - Crazy Clown Time
Card of the day:
As the final card in the suit, the Princess can be seen as the end result of the transformation begun in the Ace. Aces are always breakthroughs to me, in the case of Cups an emotional breakthrough. I feel like this describes where I am; I messaged a friend I haven't seen in a few years out of the blue earlier just to tell him I love him. My cup runneth over with emotion. But it's not schmaltzy or crippling; instead, I my emotional battery feels supercharged, while physically I remain somewhat drained and limited. My daily stretching - which falls by the wayside often of late - still tells me the damage from pulling my Hamstring almost a year ago has still not completely healed and it limits me. This of course causes unsought reflections on aging and mortality, which of course probably explains my current wealth of emotions.

2018: September 2nd
Thanks to Jeff at the Comic Bug I found Vaguess. As you can no doubt hear from the above, they are awesome. Guilt Ring will definitely end up on my favorite albums of the year.
Long day of work and sinus infection yesterday. This iteration of the infection proved what the previous one (last year) suggested: the Z-pack antibiotic no longer works. The doctor I saw at the urgent care the other day backed this up, saying he has seen approximately 40% resistance to azithromycin. As a back-up, he prescribed me a secondary prescription of doxycycline hyclate. All this just further proves a theory I have had for about fifteen years now - being that bacteria lives generations for every day we do, eventually it will outrun our defenses and conquer us. The widespread proliferation of antibacterial hand sanitizers and a quick-to-subscribe attitude to antibiotics has expedited that outcome, so be prepared. And if you can't seem to beat your sinus infections, use doxycycline hyclate - until that no longer works.*
I watched a 1971 Italian Giallo last night called Black Belly of the Tarantula. Talk about an awesome title! Directed by Paolo Cavara and scored by none other than the great Ennio Morricone, I loved the flick and intend on hunting down the score on vinyl. It is gorgeous! Here's a taste:
Playlist from 8/31:
Secret Chiefs 3 Traditionalists - Le Mani Destre Recise degli ultimi Uomini
Alice in Chains - Rainier Fog
Talking Heads - Remain in Light
Roxy Music - Eponymous
Windhand - Grey Garden (single)
Kyuss - And the Circus Leaves Town
Playlist from 9/01:
Alice in Chains - Rainier Fog
Yonatan Gat - Universalists
Vaguess - Guilt Ring
The Veils - Total Depravity
BeNNi -The Return
Chris Connelly - Artificial Madness
Bowie - Stage
Bowie - Outside
Here's a card I haven't drawn since I began doing these daily pulls. See how intoxicating the visuals are, with their soft pastels and robust female figure? The surreal aspect, where her lower half almost looks more like a mermaid's fin than legs? Of the Swan - which Crowley refers to as a Pelican, and although that may have been his intent, Lady Frieda Harris most certainly painted a swan - tending its young is motherly. I'm interpreting this as my nurture of my ideas, which are essentially like children to me.
*Yes, I realize I am both lambasting and advocating the use of antibiotics here. I only use them for sinus infections, which I get about twice a year.

2018: August 31st
This song.
8/31 - we are in the Dog Days, where Sirius is closest to our planet and has an effect on our gravitational pull and thus, us. I do not put stock in Astrology, this is Science. Look for shit to get weird.
Last night I watched Brian Yuzna's Society. Wow.
Playlist from yesterday:
Second Still - Equals EP
Silk Worm - Firewater
Roxy Music - Eponymous
Talking Heads - Remain in Light
Card of the day:
And we continue with a veritable deluge of Court Cards. Freaking me out, a bit.
Being that I have never really connected with the Disks Suite isn't really surprising when I stop to think about it. It's Malkuth, Earthly matters, and I'm always in the clouds, up in Hod, or Yesod, straining to see Tipareth. I can buckle down and take care of Earthly matters, but I do it like I swim - only when I have to and even then, holding my breath the entire time. The Knight is the Fire of Earth, and to me it always looked like he was either bumping up against a forcefield (how money sometimes makes me feel), or about to enter a thin spot, crossing worlds. I take this today as a warning that I will have to cross from my heady Fiction world into the real one to take care of something, and try to recognize that when it rears its head.

2018: August 30th
Second Still is yet another awesome LA band KXLU turned me on to. SO good. You can hear more and buy their stuff on their Bandcamp HERE. I can't wait to see them live.
Playlist from 8/29:
The Flying Luttenbachers - Constructive Destruction
Alice in Chains - Rainier Fog
David Bowie - A Reality Tour [Live]
Cough - Athame
Windhand - Grey Garden
Lustmord - The Word As Power
John Carpenter - The Thing OST
Card of the day:
A lot of Court cards lately. Higher influence. This card is waaaay loaded for me, so I went to a few websites I like with tarot information and looked around. What I found morphed into this when reflected through my own lens: Self Discovery; Moving on and moving forward. Incorporating past pain into a healthy life view.

2018: August 29th
How about a little ditty by The Flying Luttenbachers to kick things off today, eh?
A raging sinus infection woke me up in the middle of the night Monday. Ugh. Consequently, I took the day off yesterday, wrote, urgent cared and watched two unbelievably good films, both with the common theme of endurance. The first was a loan from Mr. Brown, a Sydney Pollack flick from '69 entitled They Shoot Horses, Don't They?
Bleak and Brilliant. This one is going to stay with me always. Loved it. And I finally get why Jane Fonda was such a name back in the day. She is excellent in this film. And this is based on a phenomenon that actually used to happen in this country during the Great Depression. Mind blowing.
Next up, one on Netflix I've been meaning to get around to for a couple years: A Dark Song. Wow. The best and most accurate account of Ritual High Magick I've seen in a film, even if writer/director Liam Gavin was very non-specific. Not a critique, mind you. Also, this felt so much like a filmed version of a Warren Ellis story that I immediately posit Mr. Gavin is a fan. Mr. Solomon's approach to Magick reminds me a lot of how Ellis wrote William Gravel and John Constantine in their approaches to the Occult.
A Dark Song will also be with me for a long time, and will totally go on the shell soon, even if it does appear to be perpetually on Netflix. Highly Recommended. Please do another film soon, Mr. Gavin.
NCBD this week is light, however A Walk Through Hell #4 is finally out! I feels as though it has been months since #3. Also, Bendis and Maleev's Scarlet has moved to DC with Bendis?
Playlist from 8/27:
Alice in Chains - Rainier Fog
Chris Connelly - Artificial Madness
Alice in Chains - Dirt
Godflesh - Flowers*
Nothing - Dance on Rooftops
Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats - Vol. 1
Drab Majesty - The Demonstration
8/28:
Algiers - Eponymous
*Droney remix from In All Languages. Fantastic to write to.
Nurture your personality. Seems to describe yesterday, with A Dark Song really sating a long ignored aspect of my personal ego-system, i.e. the one interested in Magick. This is rearing its head a bit in my writing of late, too. After a disastrous attempt at a first novel based on Magick - this is going back to the early 00s and while it has some great scenes, it's a mess of a 'novel' - I've largely stayed away from Magick in writing. Now, I'm finding it's helping act as glue in my current project.

2018: August 27th
My favorite song of the year, thus far. And the entire album is, after an intense day of listening to almost nothing but, clocking in at #2 of the year, right behind Zeal and Ardor's Stranger Fruit. Another great year for music (if you know where to look).
Finished Thomas Harris' Silence of the Lambs. Solid four stars. I'm still irked by some of the pacing manipulations, but that's a small thing. The end speeds by and is excellently paced. I definitely learned a thing or two here. Next up:
Playlist from 8/26:
Etta James - Second Time Around
Louvin Brothers - Satan is Real (vinyl - thanks Mr. Brown!)
Alice in Chains - Rainier Fog
The Damage Manual - >1
David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars
The Body - I Have Fought Against It, But I Can't Any Longer
Card of the day:
And yeah, my lust of result is interfering in my work process. So I'm at my CBTL trying to fix that now.

True Detective Season 3 Trailer
The fact that Jeremy Saulnier walked from directing the entire thing is troublesome. I won't make a judgement yet, but let's just say I'm skeptical.
2018: August 26th
Logged into youtube and found this in my recommended feed. I haven't watched it yet, but I can't wait to and wanted to share.
Late start both days this weekend; DwC took it out of me for most of yesterday, and today I'm just off. Also, bracing for a second showing of Panos Cosmatos' Mandy at the Egyptian, the first of which I missed catching a ticket for. I won't miss this time, especially because I want to bring my friend John with, who will be visiting, and who I want to do something insanely nice for, as his work on The Legend of Parish Fen is just ridiculous. Here's a taste:
That's a shrunken size, so it's a bit foggy, which the final art most certainly is not, but it should illustrate just why I am so excited about this project.
Time to get back to writing, but here's the playlist from the last two days (more or less):
Mastodon - Once More 'Round the Sun
Etta James - Eponymous
Alice in Chains - Rainier Fog
Stellar Corpses - Hellbound Heart EP
Squirrel Nut Zippers - Hot
No card today.
Also, I watched a handful of movies:

Psyched to have Dusty Grave from Stellar Corpses and BAT on Drinking with Comics later tonight. Tune in around 9:30 PM PST for the show, which will be streaming live on our FB page. This little tune's been knocking around in my head for a few days, so I thought I'd throw it up here to pave the way for this evening.

Five breaks stability and causes at worst strife, at best competition. There's some strife in my life right now, but it's background radiation, throbbing in the distance, lighting up my brain for a moment or two here and there, and inspiring competition for sure. Which is good - DRIVING FORCE.

2018: August 22nd
My musical day yesterday was an interesting dalliance in a lot of what I spun in the mid-00s. This song... takes me somewhere. There's a definite tone there, one that I miss, but one that puts me in a totally different headspace from the one I need to be in to write what I'm writing. Hence 'dalliance.'
Playlist from 8/21:
Doves - Lost Souls
Chris Connelly - The Night of Your Life
Chris Connelly - Pentland Firth Howl
Malcolm Middleton - A Brighter Beat
Fugazi - Steady Diet of Nothing
Atlas Moth - Coma Noir

John Carpenter/Alan Howarth - Big Trouble in Little China OST
I missed out on scoring tickets to the LA-Premiere of Panos Cosmatos's Mandy at the Egyptian, as hosted by the Beyond Fest crew. First world problems, I know.
Card of the day:
An abundance of enthusiasm and intelligence that can quickly sap the heart from things. I think this is exactly where I was last night with my writing. Luckily, I recognized the futility quagmire, closed up shop and had a beer. This morning? I drove to work in silence (as I do when I'm having problems with massaging plot) and figured out where my problem was. Thanks Knight of Wands!

2018: August 21st
Really diving into all the back catalogue material I'd missed from Chris Connelly lately. Some of these I'll be ordering on vinyl, like 2011's Artificial Madness. The album runs a gamut of industrial-influenced tunes to more melodic but still fuzzy numbers like this one. Such a gorgeous track.
About 200 pages into the Silence of the Lambs. It's been solid from the start, however some of the chapter stops are so forced in order to adhere to a 'page-turner' profile I've rolled an eye or two. Still, better short than over for this kind of book and the momentum it establishes early on. I can't wait to watch the movie again after I finish; it's been years, as despite my love of horror, the serial killer genre, especially when executed this well, is one that burrows too deep under my skin for me to partake of often.
NCBD tomorrow! Super excited for the return of Days of Hate and the second issue of Die! Die! Die! My recent re-read of Nameless stoked the flames of my Chris Burnham love, so this arrives just in time.
Playlist from 8/20:
Fugazi - Steady Diet of Nothing
Vaguess - Guilt Ring
The Body - I Have Fought Against It, But I Can't Any Longer
Algiers - Eponymous
Chris Connelly - Artificial Madness
Shostakovich - Symphonies Nos. 5 And 9
Glenn Gould - Goldberg Variations
Card of the day:
Focus on Earthly, pragmatic considerations. Contemplation and fortification, exactly what I'm working on at the moment in terms of my writing. I'll have a big one in a month or two, and I am excited.

2018: August 20th
This looks great. Jim Hosking's first feature, The Greasy Strangler, ranks as probably the most interestingly off-putting movie experience I've had in the 7 or 8 years since I finally saw John Water's Pink Flamingoes. This is both a good and upsetting thing. As Mr. Brown pointed out, with this follow-up having Universal distribution, I'm sure some of the madness will be bleached away, and I'm okay with that.
Playlist from yesterday:
Etta James - Eponymous
Etta James - Second Time Around

Because I never posted this.
I skipped out on the Deafheaven/Drab Majesty/Uniform concert. Not easy to do, but yesterday was a tough day at work and I ended up exhausted and worn pretty thin. Plus, I'm seeing Drab Majesty in two weeks at my beloved Echoplex and hold out hope that, being an LA band, Deafheaven will play the 'plex or another local venue of relatively the same size. I saw them open for Ghost at the Wiltern a few years ago and the size of the room just didn't fit.

2018: August 18th
Not gonna lie, I had chills when the song kicked in.
I've been a bit obsessed with Connelly's solo career again, and was looking for a copy of Jackietowne, from his 2018 album The Tide Stripped Bare when I stumbled across this. Shocked, to a point. I'm a firm believer that other than the Smiths, everyone in music who parted ways will eventually come together again. I guess I'd just never imagined this reunion before, especially not after reading Connelly's amazing and long out of print autobiography, Concrete, Invisible, Bullet-Proof, and Fried: My Life as a Revolting Cock. Speaking of that, I recently found out Uncle Al also did an auto, and I need to put that on my list:

Fugazi - Bad Mouth Live 1991
Bad Mouth came into my head unexpectedly a few minutes ago and the impetus to post it followed. I went looking for the album version and stumbled across this, this gorgeous piece of footage that reminded me that, while the 90s sometimes embarrass me, this is what the best of that decade's music was all about.
2018: August 13th
Happy birthday to one of my best friends in the world! I hope You have an amazing day, Missi!
Been a few days. Leaving one project behind and starting the final stretch on another. Had to put Please Believe Me away for a few days in order to gain perspective on it, as I'm not sure it's 100% finished, even though I 'finished' it last Thursday. Something is telling me there's a coda, of sorts, that has to go in. We'll see.
Attended my second HWA meeting yesterday. What an absolute inspiration these folks are! So great to talk about the craft in such a wonderful environment.
Playlist from yesterday was short because I've been listening to that SC3T Giallo ST almost none stop; I've felt it building to inspiration on a project and this morning it was revealed to me what exactly that will be, and I am psyched!
Secret Chiefs 3 Traditionalists - Le Mani Destre Recise Degli Ultimi Uomini
Windhand - Grief's Infernal Flower
Card of the day:
Needed to see this today, and the fact that it comes up in my pulls so often is definitely a reassuring sign.

2018: August 10th - NEW HIGH ON FIRE
Fuck. Yes. They're not reinventing the wheel, and I don't care. Pre-order HERE from Napalm Records for an October 5th release.
Finished Dark Moon Books' excellent collection, Exploring Dark Short Fiction #2: A Primer to Kaaron Warren. Weeeelll worth your time. Jumped right into the first of two novels I'm reading for writing homework - Silence of the Lambs by Thomas Harris. Excellent so far, not that I didn't expect exactly that. I'm going to read that and, ahem, James Patterson's Along Came A Spider, a book I'm not looking forward to as much, though I'm sure it will be a more than adequate page-turner. The idea here is for the three books Keller and I have planned to pen together, I'm looking at creating a fusion of the thriller, less-is-more page-turner style and more more literary leanings. I tend to avoid page-turners, so I'm reading what Keller has suggested are two examples of the style that are worth reading.
Playlist from yesterday:
Secret Chiefs 3 Traditionalists - Le Mani Destre Recise Degli Ultimi Uomini

2018: August 9th
New Author & Punisher up for Pre-order on Relapse Records HERE. This guy continues to baffle and amaze me with his post-apocalyptic insanity.
I have heard many good things about Channel Zero and it hits Shudder today, so I'm looking forward to that.
Not sure if I mentioned this before, but I recently started a re-watch of Deadwood, as K has never seen it and the news of the forthcoming movie caused quite a stir in me. I've begun re-watches before, but never made it very far. Thus, I've actually seen the first season enough to know a lot of it intimately. What's my favorite scene?
Al Swearengen may just be my favorite character ever. As dark as the show can be, it keeps a smile on my face almost the entire time.
New Sandman Universe #1 acquired and read, although it wasn't a very good read, rife with distractions as it was (my own fault). A good set-up for what is to come, which I must admit I'm still excited about. I've avoided this whole Doomsday Clock thing that has merged the Watchmen with the DCU proper - I'm not necessarily against the idea of the Watchmen being placed in the DCU, I just don't really care and have heard it's not very good. The Sandman Universe however, is apparently something I cannot ignore.
Playlist from 8/08/18:
Soundgarden - Superunknown
Emma Ruth Rundle - Marked for Death
Drab Majesty - The Demonstration
The Fixx - Reach the Beach
Card of the day:
So this is either me suffering from wishful thinking that Please Believe Me will be finished today - I just can't seem to nail the tone for the end of this but I am so close!!! - or it's a problem of over imagination, which could be gumming up the works on the ending. Either way, I have some work cut out for me today.

2018: August 8th - American Horror Story 8 Teaser
You put a chick in a gas mask and lingerie and I'm THERE! Seriously, I'm sure none of this imagery will actually tie into the story of American Horror Story season 8: Apocalypse, but it's cool as all hell. I've always been pretty hot and cold with the show: still haven't seen Freakshow or Coven, had pretty much given up until Hotel and Roanoke, both of which I loved, so I'll definitely be watching the new one.
NCBD. Cautiously excited for this:

2018: August 6th
How have I never posted this song before? SO good.
I watched Horsehead last night on Prime. I was really looking forward to this "Art House Horror" flick that keeps popping up in my periphery. I dug it visually, but I don't know that I loved the movie overall. Definitely worth watching - there's some gorgeous set design and costumes. But it seemed a bit style over substance.
