Watch:

Okay, this trailer for the upcoming Freaky Tales movie gives me serious reservations, but it also looks like it could be a banger. And hey, great cast. I guess I just feel like this is sandwiching into the 80s revival thing a little too much, too late. Also, the title feels... weak.

Still, I'll definitely see this in the theatre and give it a go. I want to like all movies, especially genre ones with ancient artifacts, katanas and copious amounts of blood.

Read:

Over the last two weeks or so, I read about 3/4 of a book I'm not going to name here. It's an independent book/author, and although well-written (mostly, as a hefty amount of spelling and grammatical errors abound), I can't recommend this one because it's just gross. So I jumped off and started David Wong's John Dies at the End.

At around 90 pages in, I am really enjoying this one, and it should be said, I've never been able to make it even halfway through the film adaptation. Wong's tone is so smooth and funny; funny as in 'odd' and funny as in 'ha ha.' I very much recommend this to anyone who digs a little sarcastic, oddball humor with their Horror from time to time.

One thing I love about this deck is the imagery is all very meaningful to me in a Malkuth-kinda way. So it's possible on days where I don't really have the metaphysical bandwidth to dive deep into the occulted meaning of the Tarot, I can just see a spread like this and say, "Hey, pick up the guitar today and write a new song."

2019: July 26th Spegetti Western Live '90

One of my all-time favorite Primus tracks. The sound on this one is HUGE. I've always loved the way Frizzle Fry ends: Sathington Willoughby into Spegetti Western into Harold of the Rocks. Hard to snip one of those tracks out and place it here, removed from that beautifully odd context, but I'd never seen this live version before and it's fantastic to see a camera on Ler and Herb for this long. Looks like NewWaveVault has some other cool old school stuff on their channel as well, so check it out and maybe subscribe. I did.

Last night I watched Hobo with a Shotgun for the first time since its original release. Man, I dig the flick, but it seriously reminds me of Robocop, which I have some problems with. My micro review - which contains my thoughts on Robocop - is up on my Letterbxd account HERE.



Also, I still really like the original trailer that writer/director Jason Eisener made in 2007:



The Blu Ray has a really cool "Shotgun Feature" where gun sights appear on the screen at times where you can click them and segue from the movie into behind the scenes stuff. Lots of detailed video of the practical FX and performances.

Man, I really missed the freakin' boat on the videos from this album!

Les Claypool's Duo De Twang cover Primus

After finding that video for Lee Van Cleef and posting it earlier in the week it dawned on me just how long it'd been since I had a Primus jag and I immediately set about correcting that, beginning with a couple of spins of 2011's Green Naugahyde. Then yesterday, as if the Universe decided to reward me, I found that Mr. Claypool's Duo de Twang is not only releasing an album but have shared their version of Primus' Jerry Was A Race Car Driver, which they cover (along with Wynona's Big Brown Beaver, the Bee Gees' Stayin' Alive and - this I can't wait to hear - Alice in Chains' Man in the Box) on their forthcoming album Four Foot Shack, out February 4th on ATO Records.

Bad ass.

I've never quite understood how ol' Les fell in with the jam thing - a scene that I have a little more tolerance and understanding for after recently reading former AV Club current The Dissolve writer Nathan Rabin's You Don't Know Me But You Don't Like Me.

A little.

I believe this jam thing began for Claypool with his Fearless Flying Frog Brigade project. I saw the Frog Brigade (who Duo de Twang also cover on the album) back in... ummm, late early 00's maybe? It was cool but they were opening for Phil Lesh at Wisconsin's Alpine Valley and that was a long way to go from Chicago for a half hour opening set (cuz we left after after the Brigade played - the smell of patchouli doesn't agree with me). Totally worth it though.

Anyway, more Les Claypool in any capacity is always a good thing in my opinion.

Primus - Lee Van Cleef

Wow. I am REALLY late to the game on this video. After seeing it I stumbled around the web checking up on what Les and the boys have been up to and found this on wikipedia:

"In September 2013, Les revealed that Jay Lane has departed Primus to focus on RatDog with Bob Weir. Previous drummer Tim Alexander has rejoined the band in his place. The band plans on going into the studio in November to possibly record their eighth studio album, the name will be announced in 2014."

Oh happy day!!!

MIRV - COSMODROME

Okay, this is both weird and awesome. Back in the middle 90's Mr. Brown found this record by an artist named MIRV titled Cosmodrome. MIRV (it's an acronym on the album cover - no idea what it stands for) was apparently a buddy of Les Claypool's who also played a few things on the record. Anyway, it's a concept record about a future where the ultimate tier as a musician was to play a place called the Cosmodrome. To do this though you had to be selected, and then you had to, um, have your face shaved off.

Awesome, eh?

Anyway, I have a dubbed cassette copy somewhere that I haven't seen in years. I never found a copy of the record in a physical record shop (believe me I looked) and now the things been off my radar so long that I'm not sure how I never tried to find it online. I just searched on ebay and amazon while typing this and found a wopping one copy on each, so it's apparently still fairly hard to come by.

The record is amazing. Very Zappa-esque, and it runs the gamut from blues to Primus-like weirdness to a crescendo - where the protagonist does indeed get selected and then have his face shaved off ("Don't be afraid, body alterations aren't that painful") that can only be described as frightening and machine-like.

So I just flipped over to youtube looking for something else, MIRV not having been on my mind in years, and here's a video from back in the day for one of the songs.

The internet truly is the human collective unconscious transmuted into tangible information.

Weird.
