The Afghan Whigs covering Polica? I haven't thought about Polica since... well, since HERE. So f'king cool! The Whigs also released a Still Corners cover. I've always loved the way, every once in a while, out of the blue, these guys will release a couple of covers. Very cool. Hoping this means there's new music on the way.

Watch:

Last night I took in a viewing of Mike P. Nelson's (why can't I think or say that name without thinking of Craig T. Nelson?) new remake of Silent Night, Deadly Night. 

 

I'll tell you right off the bat, I'm not much of a fan of the original. It's fine, just so sleazy it's not really my thing. That said, this film has a sequence that's getting some press where Santa kills a whole shit load of nazis.

Pretty fucking satisfying, in 2025, where nazis apparently think they're an identity choice or a protected group, to be getting so many stories lately where nazis get killed. Because, you know, the only good nazis are dead nazis. We all know that, right?

Anyway, as for the rest of the movie... It was AWESOME! I really dug this one. Go in blind, and if you can, see it in theatre. This is not a straight remake of the original film; writer/director Mike P. Nelson really does something different and, in my opinion, awesome, even while still incoporating the many of the main plot points of the '84.

Maika Monroe is really on my radar of late. True, she was fabulous in both The Guest and It Follows, and both were years ago. Seeing this year's Watcher a few months back at a Beyondfest screening, she really stole the show. And now this:

 

I signed up for Paramount + again recently so K and I could finish Evil, Season 3, and looks like I'll probably hang onto it a bit longer to catch this on Friday, October 7th.

Afghan Whigs - I'll Make You See God

I was holding off on listening to the singles The Afghan Whigs have released from the upcoming How Do You Burn, however, I'm seeing them this coming Saturday night, so I broke down and started getting to know them. Being that the album drops this Friday, September 9th, I'll have all day to listen to it. So far,  really great stuff. Not sure it will top In Spades, but that would be quite the feat. 

Gutter Twins - Idle Hands

 

The Gutter Twins - Mark Lanegan and Greg Dulli - performing "Idle Hands" on David Letterman. Easily my favorite song by the Twins, not because their other material is lacking, but because Lanegan channels a fucking demon with the low end on his voice in this one. The album version is sonically preferable, but how good is it to see these two icons playing side by side?

The watery aspect of water. From the grimoire: "Deep, Emotional Realms of Personality." I'm plumbing ideas of Deep Personality in a new writing project I'm using to bridge the huge gap I've suffered in working on the second Shadow Play book. This is a short, probably a serialized piece for No Sleep, since the other was so well received, and it's keeping me writing while so many interruptions have made it impossible to hit any kind of a continuous stride while working on the novel. 

2018: February 9th 4:53 AM

In my head upon waking. Waking, such absolute misery to crawl from my bed this cold, (relatively) California morning...

Not nearly enough sleep. My after-work nap yesterday set my sleep back and I didn't knock out until almost midnight. Just about 4.5 hours later I've hit all the snoozes I can and crawl from bed, feed the cats and put on an extra strong pot of coffee, put fingertips to these keys to make these words. How oh how am I going to manage to work 8 or 9 hours, drive 45-60 to Hollywood, come home around 10 and NOT be brain dead?

The new comic from Ales Kot, Danijel Zezelj, and Jordie Bellaire is Days of Hate; I picked issue #1 up on a whim and it's fantastic. And really, sadly relevant. Also, they have a super accurate visual depiction of DTLA on page 3 - looks like Bellaire was standing where I was two weeks ago coming out of the Converge concert at the Regent.

I'm sure everyone that would click on this has already seen it; I'm behind. Very behind. I spent two and a half weeks running around the Midwest, played a show in Dayton with a total douche and then returned to LALAland just in time to hit eleven days straight at work AND manage my wife's business during my home hours. Simply put, there's but little to no time to consume any content other than what I could fit on an iPod or in a CD wallet. That said, I found some marvelous stuff that I will get to throwing down here shortly. First though, there's a handful of things that filtered in during the trip via various outlets and I wanted to add them here, not for any real informative reasons since, again, this is essentially old news at this point, but because I actually keep this blog more for myself than anyone else - so yes, I'm essentially at least 51% writing to myself at this moment.

And it is freakin' awesome! Listen to those intro drums - like a fist coming out of a bouquet of flowers. Dulli owns on this track - his vocals match the guitars, the vulnerability laced with menace and a hint of defeat. And such a crystal clear mix - focus on the hi hat, let it ride up on top of the mix in your perception. It's, well, it's magic.
