Watain - Waters of Ain

Several years ago my good friend and Metal Curator extraordinaire Tori lent me Watain's Lawless Darkness. After a few precursory listens the album fell back into the ever churning void of music that lays just beyond my reach in this internet age of "everything available all the time". In the throws of one new release or another I'd essentially completely forgotten about Watain, even as my appreciation for certain crevices within the Black Metal dimension has deepened. Then, earlier today - much after the fact - I learned that Selim Lemouchi, the founder and main driving force of The Devil's Blood died in March. There is a wonderful tribute to Selim on Metal Sucks. If you were a fan read it, as it will give you a very multi-faceted look into this fascinating artist. The remembrance links or mentions several peripheral Selim appearances and this Watain song - on which Selim performs the outro guitar solo - is chief among them. Sitting here listening to Waters of Ain and marveling at the power of it I quickly dug Lawless Darkness back out of the virtual banks on an old mac and have begun to get better acquainted with it. Good stuff, when you're in the mood.

I hope Selim found what he was looking forward after he slipped through the gates of the silver key...

The Ocean Has a Video and a Film (NSFW)

I totally missed out on the fact that there is a version of The Ocean's Pelagial record that comes with a film shot to the length of the album (a 53:13 long song they were unfortunately forced to break into pieces when I saw them live at Summer Slaughter). Apparently I also missed the fact that they released a music video a few months ago for Bathyalpelagic II. A big, hearty thank you to Metal Sucks for bringing all this to my attention. Read their articles here and here.

The Ocean full live set @ NY's St. Vitus!!!

Now this is the way I wish to see The Ocean! I totally agree with metalsucks' Vince Neilstein (whose article on the same you should link to from the above and read) that the twenty-five minutes on Summer Slaughter was just. Not. Enough.

This footage, which I'm just now sitting down to watch this now but I'm assuming it's Pelagial live in its entirety, the way it was meant to be played. Only a few seconds in and I can already tell that the sound is better here than it was both at HOB last month and at the Glass House when I saw them in 2010. Little clubs are always the best.

And apparently that's what this was - a surprise show at NY's Saint Vitus where they were billed under the name Pelagial (not a surprise to anyone familiar with them).

1 Minute Teaser from New Jesu Song

September 24th on Avalanche Records. New Justin Broadrick in any form is always an event!
