Steely Dan - Deacon Blues

One of my favorite songs ever. I once walked around Vegas, high out of my mind on mushrooms with SD's Aja repeating over and over and over again on my ipod. This song... it's time travel.

And I'm pretty damn sure this particular youtube post is a direct-from-vinyl rip.

Brandon Cronenberg's Antiviral

You know how David Cronenberg's films make you feel really uncomfortable with the concept of your body? The weird mesh of tech and flesh, blood and steel, wire and bone that he manipulates can sometimes be downright horrifying, sometimes freakishly hot and sometimes just WTF. Well, his son Brandon may have outdone him in his first film, Antiviral. I'm embellishing, but not by much. Currently tied with Shane Carruth's Upstream Color as my movie of the year. Antiviral is streaming on Netflix - go check it out (check out the snowcat and the radio while you're at it. Big surprise comin' to you...). But be prepared. It is a bit of a rough watch. Very much worth it though.

The Ocean full live set @ NY's St. Vitus!!!

Now this is the way I wish to see The Ocean! I totally agree with metalsucks' Vince Neilstein (whose article on the same you should link to from the above and read) that the twenty-five minutes on Summer Slaughter was just. Not. Enough.

This footage, which I'm just now sitting down to watch this now but I'm assuming it's Pelagial live in its entirety, the way it was meant to be played. Only a few seconds in and I can already tell that the sound is better here than it was both at HOB last month and at the Glass House when I saw them in 2010. Little clubs are always the best.

And apparently that's what this was - a surprise show at NY's Saint Vitus where they were billed under the name Pelagial (not a surprise to anyone familiar with them).

1 Minute Teaser from New Jesu Song

September 24th on Avalanche Records. New Justin Broadrick in any form is always an event!

Midlake's singer left last year and now we get this - great job carrying on gentlemen! More info here on the mighty Brooklyn Vegan!

The Melvins Cover The Butthole Surfers

The Melvins cover Butthole Surfers

The Melvins w/ Surfers' Jeff Pinkus covering one of my favorite Butthole Surfers songs? Is this the best thing ever? Maybe...

CBGB's Trailer

Okay, Alan Rickman and Bradley Whitford in the same movie? And Stana Katic? And all this great music? And Alan Rickman?

The last shot of this trailer completely blew me away.

Revocation - Invidious

The new, self-titled record by Revocation, who I talk about considerably more here and here, finally released this past Tuesday. This is my favorite song on the record so far, but they're all good. If you dig metal - especially old school thrash a la mega conservative's Rust in Peace or Testament's Low then hurry over to Revocation's bandcamp and buy this. I doubt you will be disappointed.

New Nothing Track Dig

Via Brooklyn Vegan. Nothing came on my radar a couple months back with the Downward Years to Come EP which you can download for a paltry $5 on their bandcamp (do so - it's an amazing EP with shades of both The Raveonettes and M83. Plus you'll be supporting a great band). Really looking forward to their forthcoming full length, on Relapse no less. More info on BRVGN here.

New PJ Harvey

PJ Harvey released this song as support for the last remaining British resident held in Guantanamo Bay. Waay more information here on Stereogum.

I had to repost - Love Harvey and this is likely to set me on a binge with her music. First up, uh huh her, most likely followed by my favorite and the one I always go back to the most, Stories From the City Stories from the Sea.

The Fixx - Reach the Beach

The Fixx had long been on my radar as one of those bands who had some radio songs I've loved for as long as I can remember. I'm talking back to about the time One Thing Leads to Another and Saved By Zero were current, chart-topping singles circa 1983. I know, I was born in '76 so I would have been seven at the time. I used to sleep with a little transistor radio and those two Fixx songs along with The Clash's Rock the Casbah, John Cougar Heartattack's Jack and Dianne and all things Huey Lewis stick out in my memory (not a JCM fan, but that song holds an intrinsic nostalgic value because of that). Anyway, a couple years ago I found the album those Fixx songs are on - Reach the Beach - on vinyl at a thrift store. I bought it and it has grown in favor ever since. I've come to love the entire record, the title track above is one of my absolute favs though. There's something very John Carpenter about it.

And I've gotta say, I'm a Ti West fan as is and after waiting something like three years for his masterful House of the Devil I was not disappointed. And the thing that really just added an extra layer of pleasure in watching it the first time was the unexpected use of One Thing Leads to Another. Awesome as always Mr. West!!!

Greg Rucka, Michael Lark and Santi Arcas have a new book published by Image Comics. Read my two cents on it in  Thee Comic Column #47 on Joup.

Machete Kills New Trailer

If it's half as insane as the first one, I'm going to be very happy. Rodriquez has a knack for making old school action flicks choked full of Grind House logic. He would have ruled the 80's.

TV on the Radio - TLZ

Loved this song the first time I heard it, day the album was released as I opened my old store early, had another manager sell it to me and then sat in the office counting out drawers and giving it a once over. Loved it even more when it was used in the closing sequence/credits of Breaking Bad Season 2, episode 10.

7 days going on 6.

Countdown bitch.

Live (re-cast) Lollapalooza streaming right now

Obviously not really live streaming, but still. Not sure how long this will be re-playing or who will be playing when you hit play, but it could be interesting at the very least.

The Mormons Bandcamp

Just turned on to this band via a new friend. Fucking awesome! Obvious Jesus Lizard/Scratch Acid fans. I flew over to their bandcamp (where you can buy their new Forge Ahead E.P.) and immediately fell in love with The Mormons. If you're in LA their playing the Five Star Bar in DTLA on Friday, August 16th with The Sundowners, Infer Stellar and Arbuckle.

The Conspiracy Trailer

The first I heard of this movie was just a few moments ago on Bloody Disgusting. Go here and you will find considerably more information. But not only does this look great in an almost Eyes Wide Shut-meets-Blair Witch Project fashion, but it directly spins off of a conversation I JUST HAD LIKE AN HOUR AGO.

Weird. Just saying.

Herb Alpert - Rise

... and speaking of Mr. Alpert, this is a classic. When I hear this I can practically taste the 70's. What do they taste like? Numbness cut with baby laxative.

The Southbay's Finest Bookstore: The Book Frog

The Book Frog. The nicest staff. The most knowledgeable staff (a feat unto itself). A completely independent, "we're doing it on our own and F$^K Corporate culture" bookstore. And... a Literary Titan!!!

(and props for the Herb Alpert at the end!!!)

Am I Evil?

Remember when they were a good band? I know, I barely can either...

Bloody Cuts Films Presents - Lock Up

I posted another one of these a while back and have been wanting to go back and watch another. The one I finally landed on is Lock Up and just like Don't Move it is fantastic! An excellent Horror short with a truly frightening pay off. Go to Bloody Cuts Films website for more shorts and thanks again to Bloody Disgusting for getting the word out about Bloody Cuts and turning me onto them.

Cat Rapes Dog - Dead Boys Don't Say No

... and my the first track I heard by CRD is the one that made me listen to more. I quickly consumed Biodegradable and have been a fan since.

New Cat Rapes Dog from "Life Was Sweet"

One of my best mates, a man I like to call Monsieur Viderstrom introduced me to Cat Rapes Dog many years ago and has since generously kept me into their rekkids. He texted me last week that the first track off CRD's forthcoming "Life Was Sweet" had hit the youtubes but I've continuously forgotten about it. Things have been a bit pear-shaped and as such I've not had the attention span to continue to work a full timer, work on my novel and see to a suddenly fairly fertile period of song-writing for Christian Fisting's (hopefully) soon to be announced Free Digital E.P. Anyway, I've gotten a lot done in the last few days in all corners and as such I'm taking periodic breaks in writing tonight to get back into posting. So here's that new Cat Rapes Dog. God Hates Christians.

FINALLY!!! =- NEW TV ON THE RADIO - "Mercy"

I'm just gonna go ahead and put this on repeat until the new album arrives, hopefully sooner than later. I LOVE this band and they're new stuff always drops at just the right time. Note the gorgeous 80's-lush keyboard in the chorus and that massive guitar lead that comes in over the top of it and just takes the whole track to another level. I read a while ago that this album would not be on Interscope, so hopefully the moment it's done it will drop!

Windhand - Woodbine

I've never heard Windhand before, but I saw the album cover on Brooklyn Vegan here and had to know if it sounded like it looks. It does. What's more, from the opening note of this track I knew I loved it. Then the vocals kicked in and I REALLY LOVED it. Spectral, thick and heavy but melodic. Reminds me a little of The Work Which Transforms God-era Blut Aus Nord (the vocals more than anything else) meets Electric Wizard. Really cool. Here's the trailer for the album out soon on Relapse, and if you hit that BV link up top there's some more information on that always awesome site!

Liner Notes

Some of my favorite things in the world are the Liner Notes in old Black Sabbath albums. There's something so... clinical and pragmatic about the way they're written. Just their inclusion in the packaging flies in the face of anything you'd ever see in most of the music industry today, so they are very much evocative of the time and compliment listening to the records quite nicely.
