A Mix for Shadows

I made this mix sometime ago while working on an earlier incarnation of the novel I'm writing. The novel is dark - but not too dark. And it's mysterious. And there's a smidge of teen angst (just a smidge - I ain't no billy corrigan). Like that time you walked through the house/forest/cemetery that everyone in town said was haunted. That prickly, anxious feeling that inspires more than it condemns. I made this mix to help keep the tone while writing. The book has morphed somewhat. It's gotten a hell of a lot better and coherent. But the tone still works. And besides, this is a pretty good mix.

I always forget about 8tracks. But it's a really cool site and a good way to discover new music.

Steely Dan - Deacon Blues

One of my favorite songs ever. I once walked around Vegas, high out of my mind on mushrooms with SD's Aja repeating over and over and over again on my ipod. This song... it's time travel.

And I'm pretty damn sure this particular youtube post is a direct-from-vinyl rip.

Brandon Cronenberg's Antiviral

You know how David Cronenberg's films make you feel really uncomfortable with the concept of your body? The weird mesh of tech and flesh, blood and steel, wire and bone that he manipulates can sometimes be downright horrifying, sometimes freakishly hot and sometimes just WTF. Well, his son Brandon may have outdone him in his first film, Antiviral. I'm embellishing, but not by much. Currently tied with Shane Carruth's Upstream Color as my movie of the year. Antiviral is streaming on Netflix - go check it out (check out the snowcat and the radio while you're at it. Big surprise comin' to you...). But be prepared. It is a bit of a rough watch. Very much worth it though.

The Ocean full live set @ NY's St. Vitus!!!

Now this is the way I wish to see The Ocean! I totally agree with metalsucks' Vince Neilstein (whose article on the same you should link to from the above and read) that the twenty-five minutes on Summer Slaughter was just. Not. Enough.

This footage, which I'm just now sitting down to watch this now but I'm assuming it's Pelagial live in its entirety, the way it was meant to be played. Only a few seconds in and I can already tell that the sound is better here than it was both at HOB last month and at the Glass House when I saw them in 2010. Little clubs are always the best.

And apparently that's what this was - a surprise show at NY's Saint Vitus where they were billed under the name Pelagial (not a surprise to anyone familiar with them).

1 Minute Teaser from New Jesu Song

September 24th on Avalanche Records. New Justin Broadrick in any form is always an event!
