I'm sure I've spoken about Portishead's third album, Third, here at some point, and I know I've posted my favorite song from my favorite album of theirs. Third has a quality not many albums have. It sounds to my ears like a mapping of my own personal mental interiority. I'm not sure I can adequately explain that without filling up a few pages; suffice it to say, this album lived in my blood from the moment I first heard it upon release in April of 2008.

Watch:

I drove up to the Belcourt Theatre in Nashville last night to see David Lynch's Eraserhead on the big screen for the first time. Needless to say, it did not disappoint.

The sound design in this film is amazing, and to finally behold it on the big screen... man! I've seen many of Lynch's films at the theatre - everything from Lost Highway after (except The Straight Story) as they came out, as well as Blue Velvet and the original Twin Peaks Pilot, but never Eraserhead. This was everything I thought it would be. Also, the audience had a special treat, as The Belcourt is pairing many of their David Lynch Retrospective across the month of March with some of his short films, so I also had the distinct pleasure of seeing The Grandmother.

I'd seen this before, but not in years and not on a big screen. The Grandmother may be even more unnerving than Eraserhead; I'm not the first one to say it, but many of these early-period Lynch films have an unmistakable "Industrial Nightmare" feeling to them. I had indulged in a deep drag from my vape pen before the screening, only to realize by the time The Grandmother began that it hit me SUPER hard. So I went into both films completely ripped and had a full-on hallucinatory experience, which was a bit difficult to manage at the time, but eventually worked out to be an extremely memorable experience.

5 Days 'til Halloween

 

Over the weekend, Chelsea Wolfe released a cover of "In Heaven" from David Lynch's Eraserhead. After being a fan for years and charting her remarkable evolution as an artist never content to stay idle in any on particular sound, I didn't think it was possible for me to be surprised or 'like' Ms. Wolfe any more than I already do. This proved I was way wrong, and that's awesome. There's a level of excitement introduced back into my relationship with her music that makes it feel kind of new again.

31 Days of Halloween:

I had a hard time deciding on a flick last night and ended up doing something I'd been meaning to for a few years now - going back and revisiting Mike Flanagan's 2011 feature film debut Absentia. Still holds up like it did when I watched it back when it first landed on Netflix, circa 2011 or 2012 - this was the flick that put Flanagan on my radar and the reason I went out and saw Oculus in the theatre. It's really been awesome seeing him grow into such an awesome director, and all the indications were here in this first flick. Limitations be damned, he really made something special with this one:

Miranda Sex Garden - In Heaven (Everything is Fine)

A great rendition of a classic David Lynch-penned tune. The organ that serves as a bridge is among my favorite sounds ever.

How did I get to this? Weeeeellllll.....

I am a HUGE Miranda Sex Garden fan, but I haven't been on a 'binge' with them in a while. Then I a little while ago I was over on the always awesome Heaven is an Incubator and listened to this incredible Lustmord track that he posted (go to that track directly on the 'Incubator here). Somewhere in there (I was drifting and not totally conscious of time - the track will do that to you) there was an organ sound very similar to the one I mention above.
