David Lynch & Chrsta Bell - The Answers to the Questions

 

A second 'single' from David Lynch & Christa Bell's upcoming Cellophane Memories album dropped yesterday, complete with an animated video by Lynch himself. So far, both tracks from this have defied all manner of expectations and/or predictions.

NCBD:

I didn't post for NCBD last week because there was only one book on my list, and I didn't end up hitting the shot to grab it. Part of that is no doubt that, with only one issue out so far, Scarlett has not inspired the same kind of "Gottasee" that the Cobra Commander and Duke mini-series did. 

On to this week, which is also a light one:

LOVE this cover for Garth Ennis and Jacen Burrows' Get Fury #3. This has been a solid book so far; it's cool to see Ennis return to both Nick Fury and Frank Castle with his trademark flair for the violent and the grotesque.

The last couple issues of Daniel Warren Johnson's Transformers have really opened the book up, with new characters, new agendas and new subplots aplenty. I like that we're spending a lot of time with a good mix of Gen 1 and later characters and that in hindsight, the storytellers can really introduce anyone at any time, unlike the original Marvel comic that, while I love it, was more beholden to introducing and highlighting characters as they were introduced in the toy line.

Watch:

Neil Marshall has a new film on the way. Co-writer and star Charlotte Kirk leads the cast of what looks like a high-energy heist-gone-wrong flick. 

Duchess hits VOD on August 9th; I haven't loved most of Neil Marshall's output over the last few years. Starting with 2020's The Reckoning, his films have seemed... safe? Not sure if that's exactly the word I want, but it will do. Last year's The Lair was a touch better, but really just beat-for-beat skinning of Dog Soldiers, with the story and action transposed to the desert where the characters fight demons (or whatever it was) instead of Werewolves. Still, I'll always give this man's films a chance, just based on Dog Soldiers and The Descent.

Killing Machine Brings a Reckoning

I follow a man who goes by the handle Jomparantala on IG who has totally made me reassess a lot of the music I grew up with in the 80s but later dismissed. I won't say I ever totally gave up on Judas Priest - Living After Midnight remains a song I never stopped turning up to eleven whenever it comes on, although it's been so long since I listened to any radio station that would play it, so while it lingers on an old playlist, it's been a minute. Seeing Jom post about Priest yesterday, I definitely see myself firing up some today.

Everything lately has pointed to self-control, something I've been in short supply of lately (he types as he opens another beer at 11:04 PM moments after setting alarms that being at 4:05 AM)

2018: December 20th

I've never been a very big MC5 fan. I've always labored under the idea that the right time/place just never hit me with them, despite several of my best friends being huge fans well back into the 90s. Mr. Brown saw them live recently, and alerted me to the fact that the new band is, for me, something I simply can NOT ignore. Original guitarist Wayne Kramer is joined on this current tour by:

And one of the best live vocalists I've ever seen, still to this day probably fifteen years after last time seeing him with one of my favorite bands, from Zen Guerrilla, Marcus Durant. I missed the show in LaLaLand, and I'll have to live with that, but thanks to KEXP and their wonderful Live on KEXP series, I at least have this.

I really intended on posting the new Hellboy trailer that dropped yesterday. I love the two Hellboy flicks GDT did, especially Hellboy: The Golden Army, which I always thought felt like the first movie if someone gave it a Mandy-sized dose of LSD. I was sad to see that run of Hellboy end, but with Harbour as the red-skinned pulp hero, Ian McShane as Bruttenholm, and Neil "Dog Soldiers" Marshall directing, I'm all in. Even though I HATE the first trailer. After having a momentary panic, I did some digging and my encroaching suspicion seems to be confirmed: this trailer was edited in a slightly dishonest way, so as to push a bunch of humor to the front and give the film a more "Guardians of the Galaxy" type vibe. This of course makes perfect marketing sense marketing wise, so I'm willing to forgive that, especially when a Deadline interview with creator Mike Mignola includes this quote: "Neil is a horror director so the idea then was to make a darker film." Read the full interview HERE. Yeah, the interview is three months old, but I feel like Mignola's words are more poignant now that we have a trailer that, hopefully, is at least a touch misleading.

The Earthy aspect of Air. My initial impetus is to translate this as herald of a possible external or internal conflict today, however in looking at the nifty little reference book that came with the beautiful mini Thoth deck my good friend Missi gifted me while I was in Chicago, I read this: "A young woman, stern and revengeful, with destructive logic, firm and aggressive, skilled in practical affairs," and I realize this is EXACTLY one of the characters I am writing in the book at the moment, one of the ones that brings everything around to the book's conclusion. Cassandra Tenorio is very skilled, motivated solely by vengeance, and maybe should act a little more like it. Gloves = off!

Anticipation: Tales of Halloween

I realize I'm jumping the gun a bit, after all it is only March. However, after just now stumbling upon this impending release I find myself chomping at the bit for October! Lucky McKee? Neil Marshall? Joe Begos? Darren Lynn Bousman? And the topper - Mike Mendez? Auteur of The Convent, my all-time favorite indie horror flick and one of my favorite movies ever, period? SOLD! And when you consider that, holy crap, it's already March and the first three months of 2015 have already flown by, well then, I guess it's just as good as June then too. And if it's just as good as June, then we might as well call it September, and if it's September, October's right around the corner! Depressing that time flies that fast yes, but at least now we have something to salivate for in the meantime as life hits warp speed on another year. And while I didn't find anything cinches October as the month of release, chances are it's a safe bet.
