Live Drug Church for NCBD!

I love Dan Watters' Batman: Dark Patterns series. The first storyline wrapped up last issue, so this is the start of the second, which will run to issue six and round out the series. 


One of those my DwC cohost Mike Shin holds for me at the shop in Chicago, so I'll have a bunch of Z News waiting for me when next I travel North. So much fun.


Have we ever gotten Void Rivals and Transformers in the same week before? We must have, but seeing this today feels exhilarating. Maybe it's just because...


... Bruticus is on the cover! I've professed my love of all Combaticons here previously I'm sure; in fact, I just pre-ordered the new Vortex figure from HasbroPulse last week. Can't wait until I have them all and can combine them into Bruticus, maybe chase my cats around with him.


I loved the first issue of Justin Jordan's Mine is a Long, Lonesome Grave and I'm coming back for more! Like I mentioned below, though, I neglected to add this one to my Pull (I think), so I may have to have the shop order me one. Either way, going forward, this is on the list!


Take what I said about ...Lonesome Grave above and apply it to the second issue of A.J. Lieberman and Mike Henderson's The Hive. A street-level crime story with some odd flourishes; I'm very intrigued to see where this one is going. Add it to the list!




Watch:

One of the trailers I've seen in the theatre of late that really catches my eye is Ryan Coogler's Sinners. Not the best title, but damn if this doesn't look fantastic.


The mythology behind Robert Johnson and the "Crossroads" has long fascinated me, and it seems like Coogler is doubling down on that here. There's just something about this era of American history when it mixes with the Supernatural. It really works for me. Can't wait to see this on the big screen!

I think this Pull actually explains something that just happened while writing this entry, or at least helps me understand why it happened.

I had this entire post penned and saved, I opened a new window to download the picture of today's Tarot Pull and when I came back, large chunks of what I'd written were gone. Only, this wasn't a case of  "I forgot to save." I titled this entry last, but that is still here. Missing are my comments under the trailer for Sinners, the entire NCBD section, and all the tags I'd added. 

I'm sure this is just a weird glitch, but these are things we should pay attention to from time to time. In this case, I think I'm taking away that I've been continuing on my comic book life as before, and that's a mistake. With Diamond going or gone, the landscape is changing. I typically forget to put myself down for books to be added to my Pull, and thus, I miss stuff. Specifically,

My Ten Favorite Albums of 2024

This list isn't to say I don't have more than ten favorite albums in 2024 because this year has been chocked full of great music. Maybe I'm just more in tune or something; I don't know. A couple years ago, I remember doing this list and saying up front that I felt like I spent way more time listening to older music. Not this year; I could barely keep up, and every time I thought I had this list finished, something else came my way and made me rethink everything. Here then, is perhaps the most tentative top-ten list I've done since 2013, when I kind of bitched out and did eleven. 

Note: I did away with the numbering because the order is interchangeable and impossible to commit to. That said, Numbers one and two are definitely my favorite albums of the year.

Zeal and Ardor - GREIF

The first Zeal and Ardor record written by the band, not just founder Manuel Gagneux, and it's fantastic. Very different from previous albums, but that's the thing that impresses me the most about this band - the evolution. From a mission statement that would have worn out its welcome in the hands of most others, Manuel has shepherded this project to new heights, and there's never a moment I'm not 100% enthralled.

Chelsea Wolfe - She Reaches Out to She Reaches Out to She

Another left-hand turn from Ms. Wolfe! There are moments on this record that remind me of mid-90s trip-hop, a la Poe's first record. There are also moments where I feel the dark echo chamber of Chelsea Wolfe's mind, and it continues to draw me into her strange, Stoner-brand Desert Psyche Rock. There's something so expressive about every aspect of the music Ms. Wolfe creates - I'm literally transported into what feels like a very clearly defined psychic space, each album its own specific time and place. Her world only briefly syncs up with the 'real,' which makes listening feel like I am literally catching onto pieces of her consciousness. It feels intimate and a little scary at times, like a lot of the best music does.

Shellac - To All Trains

Yeah, like the final Shellac album wasn't going to be on this list. I have to admit, I'm not the biggest fan of the band's previous record, and this one... shit, I've had a lot of internal trouble accepting this record simply because it's release dovetailed with the death of one of the most important persons in modern music. A Chicago native, like myself, and what's more, one of the last bastions of integrity turned up to eleven, Steve Albini. But Shellac's character is something etched into me across the divide since 2000's Thousand Hurts, the first Shellac record I bought and fell deeply in love with. The cynicism, the in-jokes that long-time listeners fall in on simply by having gotten to know these strange men who play jagged, angular analog indie rock with fists... it's all just such a pleasure, and I will miss it for the rest of my days.

Moon Wizard - Sirens


I love this record! I had never heard of Moon Wizard before Sirens was released somewhere in the first few months of the year, but this one has been a constant companion ever since. This four-piece writes and plays this blissfully melodic sludge that feels extremely well-defined for such a relatively young band. The melodic strains of lead singer Sami Wolf's voice are perfectly matched by  Aaron Brancheau's guitar, whose riffs and arranging go from soaring emotional heights to "bash your fucking head in" even while wielding the spry, haunting melodies strewn across the runtime of this record. Magnolia is a forever song for me, burned into my brain upon contact and perhaps matched only by Luminaire's ghostly ability to snare the very breath from my lungs.

• The Cure - Songs For A Lost World


Talk about a late entry. As much as I am an eternal fan of The Cure's albums Pornography and Disintegration, I haven't really kept up with anything they've done since the late 90s. Even the other 80s/90s albums stay on the outskirts of my heart. I love Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Head on the Door, et al, but none of them are essential to my being the way the other two are. Then they release Songs For A Lost World, and Whammo! Another complete emotional sledgehammer! This is what I feel The Cure does best. 

Both aforementioned previous albums destroyed me at different stages of my life, shattered me, and eventually put me back together. That's exactly what Songs For A Lost World promises; I'm just too emotionally defensive at the moment to allow it full access. You get it from the album's title, yeah? This fucker's poignant, especially when you consider it was released back in late October, right before... well, you know. 

Upon first listen, every tune, every melody seemed instantly ingrained in me, so that upon each subsequent early listen, I felt I already knew every song by heart. These songs hurt, though. Maybe it's the times, maybe it's the fact that I came out of the first months of 2024 actively acknowledging that we now live in a dystopian future, but this album just feels like what the world needs to, well, go out on.

Amigo The Devil - Yours Until the War Is Over


The album whose title I misquoted the most this year, Amigo the Devil has been increasingly endeared to me for a few years now, and I have my very good friend Mr. Brown to thank for that. The post-modern Singer/Songwriter tradition I fell in love with through Nick Cave and Tom Waits is alive and well in this man, as he balances the delicate and diabolical sides of his own existence against an ever-evolving tableau of scenarios that the most debaucherous of us can only shake out heads and say, "Goddamn, I'd like to buy this man a beer."

Justin Hamline - The House With Dead Leaves


Full disclosure, since this record was released in March, Justin has come to be a friend of mine. He's guested on The Horror Vision twice this year; however, before the release of his score for a non-existent Giallo, I only knew him as a person I followed on IG. One I wasn't entirely sure how I discovered in the first place. We were obviously like-minded mutants, but when I saw him begin to post about this album, I knew it was going to be a huge record for me. Coincidentally, I spent the year writing a Giallo novel, and this record immediately slipped into place as a constant soundtrack for those sessions. It colored many key scenes in the book and put me in that very specific Giallo tone, which isn't exactly easy to do for the first time invoking it with prose.

Oranssi Pazzuzu - Muuntautuja


Oranssi Pazuzu's Muuntautuja is the first record the band has released since I became a fan. I'm still not familiar with their entire body of work to date; it was late last year that the members of Baroness put this band on my radar by way of their "What's in My Bag?" on the Amoeba Music YouTube channel, but the moment I hit play on their Live At Roadburn album from 2017, I was hooked. I suppose their off-kilter approach to psychedelic Black Metal scratches the same itch for me that Blut Aus Nord does; the songs are all cohesive but unlike anything I've ever heard before. This was especially true the first time I hit PLAY on the track "Valotus". It was late; I was buzzed, had headphones on, and didn't quite understand what exactly I was listening to. It was music, yes, but there was such a "Cosmic Occult" element to the sounds and arranging that I wasn't sure how most of what I was hearing was being made or orchestrated. I knew at that exact moment this would be an album that would earn my devotion by confounding me, by pushing the boundaries of what I like and listen to and comprehend about music.

Drug Church - Prude


I was only really familiar with Patrick Kindlon's name as one of the two writers on We Can Never Go Home, the comic/graphic novel released by Black Mask Comics back in 2014. After that, I followed him through a few more series, not realizing this band I started hearing about counted him as singer. When my good friend Jacob recommended 2022's Hygiene that year, it slowly became a go-to, and as it did, my research revealed Kindlon's involvement. Which, of course, only made me love Drug Church more. Now, with Prude, I can honestly say Kindlon's lyrics are among my favorites out there at the moment. Lyrics aren't something I adhere to easily; I like a lot of music where I couldn't sing along if I tried. But Prude is sharp and astute from the jump, and every track kicks ass musically, as well.

• Ministry - HOPIUMFORTHEMASSES

I don't know how Uncle Al keeps doing it, but Ministry continues to not just be relevant ideologically, but musically as well. Goddamn, if this isn't my favorite album of theirs since 2008's The Last Sucker. The samples are spot-on, the lyrics angry but (mostly) thought-provoking, and the songs blaze a path from track one through to the end, with penultimate track "Cult of Suffering" and its guest vocals by Gogol Bordello's Eugene Hütz weighing in as my favorite song of the year.

Noirvember!

 
Yesterday would have been Ennio Morricone's 95th birthday. Sadly, the legend left us back in 2020, but here at the onset of Noirvember, I couldn't pass up posting the title theme from his score for Sergio Sollima's 1970 Città Violenta, AKA Violent City.

So yeah, I have so much fun with 31 Days of Horror every year that I've decided to pick up on another month-long theme for viewing. That's right - Noirvember is officially underway! 

This is the first time I remember hearing about this one, courtesy of an article on Bloody Disgusting last week. It sounds perfect for the early darkness of November (which is totally f**king with me this year, for some reason). We kicked this off last Friday night with a screening of The Cohen Brothers' stunning debut, Blood Simple!


I love this film. So stark, brutal and just dark, man. DARK! Every performance is a gem; so many little Cohen Brothers flourishes help endear this one. Perfect example - the incinerator out back of Julian's bar. I would argue this is as much a Horror film as it is Noir, but there's no need to argue because no matter how you classify Blood Simple, it's a powerhouse and a classic, perfect for kicking off Noirvember! (Also, I love how much this poster reminds me of my favorite poster for Lucio Fulci's House By the Cemetery).

Next up, Billy Wilder's 1944 seminal classic Double Indemnity!


Nothing I can say about this film that hasn't been said a million times by people far smarter than me. A masterpiece and seminal Noir that sits right up alongside Sunset Blvd. Stanwyck really brings it; she's seductive, cold and evil. And MacMurray - it's hard to believe he was largely known for comedies up to this point. He's just perfect (if a skosh overcooked). Plus, Edward G. Robinson as Keyes - one of my favorite characters in film history.




Doc:

I absolutely love Drug Church's new record, Prude, so when a short making-of documentary popped up in my YouTube feed, I cracked a beer and hit play. 


Prud is a serious contender for my favorite album of the year, and although I only recently learned that Patrick Kindlon - who I was familiar with from writing comics - is also the singer of the group, I know very little else. Sometimes, learning anything about a band is a bad thing. With Drug Church, however, you can just tell by their lyrics that these guys walk it like they talk it. And filmmaker Dookie Meno did a helluva a job with this. Highly recommended.

That's a HUGE part of this card for me. It's not just a meaning; it's a tactic. Not a lot of how I have learned to interpret the Tarot gets that pragmatic, but I'd like to get there. Beyond that, in The Book of Thoth, Crowley says, "instability in the very foundations of Matter. This reminds us of the 'intense strain' of physical existence.

Drug Church - Mad Care

 
Man, 2024 will be the toughest year to whittle out a Top Ten list since I started doing Top Ten lists. There are quite a few albums that feel like my favorite of the year, and the new Drug Church is the chief among them. Never mind that I love Patrick Kindlon as a comic writer; I like him even more as the singer of this awesome f@cking band!

My copy of Severin Film's All the Haunts Be Ours, Volume 2, arrived late last week, and Saturday night I sat down and chose a first offering to watch from it. If you haven't seen the 'track listing,' it's too verbose for me to reiterate here, so follow THIS LINK.


Anyway, I chose Don Sharp's 1973's Psychomania. This was on Shudder for what felt like forever a few years ago, and while I think I caught some of it on a late-night Shudder TV jag, it made no impression other than the film looked like the era of its origin. Flash Forward to last night and the first thing I noticed upon hitting 'Play' was the pristine remastering Severin performed on this one. This comes as no surprise - the inaugural edition of All the Haunts Be Ours showed how serious Severin's approach is to applying their staunch approach to film preservation in the hallowed halls of Folk Horror. So, restoration-wise, picture and sound, this presentation of Psychomania is a pure pleasure to behold. That said, how's the film? Solid. There's a Hammer affectation here without all the trappings that come with Hammer Horror, which I am generally only a fan of for about a month every four to five years.*

My favorite part of this film, though? The opening credit sequence. I watched it three times before moving on to the rest of the film. It's spooky and gorgeous, and the wah guitar-driven score is perfect for capturing the mood and era of the film. Here it is below, albeit culled from YouTube, not Severin's pristine version.

My only entry in the Grimoire is a sparse and foreboding, "A difficult period in material life," so let's see what Mr. Crowley has to say, shall we? 

In opening the Book of Thoth, I'm reminded how little time is spent on the "pip" cards*. Here's the entire entry on the card:

"The number Seven, Netzach, has its customary enfeebling effect, and this is made worse by the influence of Saturn in Taurus. The disks are arranged in the shape of the geomantic figure Rubeus, the most ugly and menacing of the Sixteen. (See Five of Cups.) The atmosphere of the card is that of Blight. On the background, which represents vegetation and cultivation, everything is spoiled. The four colours of Netzach appear, but they are blotched with angry indigo and reddish orange. The disks themselves are the leaden disks of Saturn. They suggest bad money."

The general sentiment here is to keep your wits about you; something today could go wrong.

Drug Church - Demolition Man

 

BIG thanks to Mr. Brown, who clued me into the fact that comic writer Patrick Kindlon's band Drug Church has a new record out! Kindlon is kind of the pinnacle of the evolution of Punk Rock to me at the moment: he writes wonderfully subversive and thought-provoking comics, and he sings in an awesome band that has a social awareness that reminds me a bit of Fugazi, although turned somewhat inward. Really great stuff.

31 Days of Halloween:

Not much to say about my viewing over the weekend. Rewatching the original Terrifier, I'm merely reminded how great the second and third entries are with an actual plot, although Leone's FX work is still great (although subdued by lack of budget), and it's interesting to see the Victoria character's origin again, given what she's become. That was Friday night; Saturday was Ti West's The Houe of the Devil with Joe Bob from The Last Drive-In episode aired during the first season of the show, back in 2019. House is normally a film I prefer to watch uninterrupted, but this is my second viewing in the last few months (I watched it when Maxxxine hit theatres, too), and I'd never seen Joe Bob 'do' the film, so it was time. Very cool factoids throughout.


Last night, I re-watched Lucky McKee's The Woods. This was his 2006 follow-up to May. May is one of my all-time favorite films. The Woods is... not a bad film by any means. However, something about it feels very hollow to me. I don't remember how I felt about this one when I first saw it upon the initial DVD release, but it definitely didn't move the needle with me this time. 

I feel like I am running out of time this month. There's been a couple not-so-great viewings, and there's a ton of stuff I want to get to. Might have to organize the remainder of my viewings.

Never Hike Alone 2!

 

New music from Drug Church. Mr. Brown recommended these guys to me a few weeks back but they quickly fell off my radar before I ever got the chance to listen to them. When I sat down earlier today to start this post, something just clicked. There's a distinct 90s indie rock underpinning here - I hear a lot of Bob Mould, especially Sugar-era, only with a huge drum sound that really changes the dynamic of that comparison. Turns out, exactly as Mr. Brown had promised, the entire record is Fantastic; you can order it from Pure Noise Records HERE.

The new episode of The Horror Vision Horror Podcast went up yesterday. We gathered this past Saturday to watch Mickey Keating's new movie Offseason, and in my book, it did not disappoint. You can hear our spoiler-free review if you click the little widget at the top right hand of this page, or on your favorite podcast streaming service.




Also, the IndieGoGo campaign for Friday the 13th Fan Film Never Hike Alone 2 is now live! While I'm not a very big fan of the actual Friday flicks, I quite like Vincent DiSanti's films and will definitely be throwing down on this one that brings the Thom Matthews back as Tommy Jarvis for an ultimate showdown with Mr. Voorhees.

Dollar Bin:

Last Tuesday, I introduced a new weekly feature called Dollar Bin. This is a place where I can talk about all the cool, nostalgic, or just plain awesome items I find while flipping through the dollar bins in the comic shops I frequent. That said, while this week's featured score was indeed found in a dollar bin,  it is most definitely not a comic. 


I'd never heard of Nyctalops magazine until I brought this one home last week. Nyctalops was a literary Horror magazine dedicated to H.P. Lovecraft and his contemporaries published independently in the 70s and 80s. It featured reviews and editorial pieces of contemporary and historic Horror and Weird Fiction and often included short stories by contributors that included Ramsey Campbell, Robert Bloch, and Thomas Ligotti, and many, many more. 

This issue is #18, published in 1983, and it features two essays on themes found in the works of Robert Aickman, as well as an essay by famed Lovecraft scholar S.T. Joshi, to name but a few of its treasures. Also, I found it particularly thrilling to note that in the forward to this issue, Editor Howard O. Morris excitedly mentions that the Magazine's printer, Silver Scarab Press, has plans to publish, "... tentatively, a collection of horror stories by Thomas Ligotti, Songs of a Dead Dreamer."

Today, Horror literature fans know ..Dead Dreamer to be one of Ligotti's most influential works, and I found it super cool to stumble across a reference to it before the polarizing author made his mark.

I'm not entirely certain how to read this one. I'm tempted to interpret the 7 of Cups as an inverted victory; a good thing that goes too long and turns sour, but I'm not entirely sure how that... wait. Maybe. I'll have to report back on this one. Sometimes it's best to follow flashes of inspiration without thinking about them too much.
